As in the previous years, the species inventory on Koltur continued this summer. Two botanists from Germany, Oliver Bechberger and Ruben Clemens, joined us on the island in July.
By the end of their stay, they had added five vascular plant species and at least seven species of mosses onto the plant checklist for Koltur. But one of the new records for the island was even a new record for the Faroes: Juncus ranarius (“froskasev” in Faroese). It is a pioneer plant, able to colonize disturbed areas with high soil moisture. On Koltur, it was found growing on bare sandy patches along the rocky shore as well as in the man-made ditches surrounding the barley field.
